Before I started my business I knew there were going to be challenges, not just with the work itself or learning about business, but with my capacity to balance work and life.
At this point in my life I know myself. I know I’m someone who can use stress to force myself to work harder. I know what burnout feels like. And I knew if I was going to start this business I wanted to make sure I set boundaries in place so it was sustainable for years to come.
Here’s 5 things I do that help with that:
I work with my rhythms
I focus well early in the morning and early afternoon. Late morning I spend on my personal life, and by late afternoon I’m winding down. And I don’t work nights or weekends, even when my mind is still racing to come up with ideas about my business or things that need to be done.
I build systems that protect my energy
Whenever I find myself doing something more than once, I try to find a way to automate it a bit more to save myself time in the future.
I listen to my body
Creativity requires time away from work, and a business is much harder to run burnt out. Even when there’s a lot on my plate, I try to make time for exercise and meditation to regulate my body physically, mentally and emotionally.
I focus on the work that matters
I only put 3 things on my to-do list for each day. If those 3 things get done, great. If not, that’s ok. There will always be more to do, and I trust I’m doing the best I can each day.
I let my business support my life, not consume it
My decided my ultimate goal for my business was that it would support the life I wanted to live. Work is very important to me, but time spent with family, friends, and on hobbies is more important.
What are some ways that you’re staying grounded while you build?
